In Alamance County, approximately 8000 dogs and cats are euthanized every year. Until unchecked reproduction is controlled through spay/neutering, this problem will never go away and will, in fact, only get worse. To adopt a pet from the local shelter, you can go by their facility or check out the animals in need of a home by following the links at the above mentioned website.  Current adoption rates are $80 for dogs and $60 for cats. However, this is NOT A CHARGE for the pet as some people assume. Fees include spay/neuter surgery, heartworm test (dogs 6 months and older), initial deworming, 1-year rabies vaccine, Bordetella and DHLPP vaccinations for dogs, and FVRCP vaccination for cats. Given what these same services normally cost (even at the low cost clinic), this is an amazing savings. You are giving these wonderful dogs and cats another chance and saving money, too.  It's a win-win-win (the animal wins, you win, the community wins).
